Visiting my hometown, Leetonia, and spending time with family this week. Walked down to the coke ovens that last operated in the early 1920s. My Dad thinks some of them were fired back up during WWII. At one time Leetonia was the largest producer of coke for the steel industry in the US, maybe the world. Coke, made from coal, was the fuel used to produce the hot fires required in steel mills.
